Hello! This is Arthur.
I thought I would write this blog entry in English. I tried to make it easy to read. Please tell me if you think it's OK or not!
Last week I cut down a tree in our garden. (There are 12 trees in a small garden!) While cutting it down, I thought there were some similar points to English learning.
Start with what you have
The first thing I did was to start digging around the bottom of the tree with a spade we already had. It's a bit broken but I could use it. I could start to see the roots quite quickly. I could cut some of them with a small saw.
If you have an old English vocabulary book on your bookshelf, why not start with that? It might not be perfect, but you can probably learn some new words from it.
Small actions add up
I kept digging and cutting. Each time I cut a root I tried pushing the tree. Nothing happened after the first cut, or the second cut, or the third cut... However, I kept going and the tree started to move.
Each cut was only small, but as I added more cuts I could see the results. If you study English for one day, you probably won't feel different, but if you keep going for a month I am sure you will start to see some results.
Keep going
The tree was big and it took a long time to keep digging and cutting! With three small children and a business to run, I didn't have much time to cut the tree each day.
However, when I had a little bit of time I went to the garden and made a little bit of progress.
You don't need a lot of time each day to study English - just find a little bit of time and keep going every day!
Use the right tools
Eventually, I couldn't use the old spade and saw any more. When it became difficult to use them, I needed to get something better. I bought a stronger spade and an electric saw. I used them to finish the job and I could push the tree over!
In your English learning, you will need to get new tools eventually. You need to choose the right tools at the right time. If you are studying for the Eiken grade 2 test, you need a vocabulary book for the grade 2 test - a book for grade 3 or grade 1 won't help you now.
If you're looking for a new English tool, maybe one of our videos or events can help you
